Tang Ying, the spokesperson for the China International Development Cooperation Agency, said on June 1 that the Ebola outbreak has continued to spread in parts of Africa in recent days, posing a severe public health challenge. The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.
In light of the development of the outbreak and the needs expressed by the African side, the Chinese government is paying close attention to the matter and has decided to provide emergency humanitarian aid to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and dispatch a team of medical experts to the country to provide medical services and assistance, according to Tang.
Tang emphasized that in addition to bilateral assistance, the Chinese government will also provide assistance to the African Union Commission and collaborate with it on epidemic prevention and control. China will support the epidemic prevention and control efforts of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in order to bolster African countries' capacity to combat the outbreak, she said.
Tang said that the Chinese government stands ready to continue providing assistance within its capacity in response to the actual needs of the affected countries, and to aid them in overcoming the outbreak at an early date.
