In a recent announcement by the China Union of Life Science Societies, China’s top 10 advances in life sciences in 2023 featured a groundbreaking project recommended by the Biophysical Society of China (BSC) — Microbial-host-isozyme as a new target for regulating metabolic diseases.

Led by Jiang Changtao from Peking University, this project introduces the concept of microbial-host-isozyme, having developed a high-throughput isozyme screening system and revealed the widespread presence of these enzymes, showcasing their ability in regulating host disease processes across species.

The project received acclaim with seven reviews published in such journals as Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, Cell Metabolism, and Nature Chemical Biology. Experts consider this initiative a pioneering breakthrough in the precise intervention of diseases by targeted gut microbiota.

The annual selection of China’s top 10 advances in life sciences started in 2015. It aims to promote research and technological innovation in life sciences and showcase the country’s significant research achievements in the sector.

The BSC has contributed to this initiative over the years, injecting academic strength into the development and innovation of life sciences in China.
