Updated: 2019-10-21

Shanxi University Professor Zhang Shuting donated 450,000 yuan ($63,400) to his university on Sept 29, according to university officials.

They said the funds will be used to reward students who have studied hard and have a good school performance, as well as to help poverty-stricken students to finish their university education.

Every year, 10 students qualified for the application requirements will be selected, with each obtaining a prize or grant of 3,000 yuan.

It was the second time Professor Zhang has donated money to Shanxi University, since he donated in September last year to help invite domestic and internationally prestigious professors deliver lectures and conduct culture exchanges at Shanxi University.

Zhang is the founder of "sclerotium", which is a new modern discipline that studies the use and applications of mushrooms.

Its research scope includes sputum biology, fermentation technology, biochemical processing and marketing. Zhang was hired as a visiting professor of Shanxi University in 1982.
