The Traditional Architectural Culture Forum, along with a series of activities to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Interior Design Branch of the Architectural Society of China, was held at Shanxi University (SXU) on Aug 25.

Design experts and professional designers from Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, and Shanxi provinces gathered at the university to discuss the relationship between interior design and traditional architecture.

A number of experts delivered speeches, including Su Dan, chairman of the Interior Design Branch of the Architectural Society of China and deputy director of the Art Museum of Tsinghua University.

Experts said that Shanxi should be attractive to the design community as it is one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization. They also suggested "recreating the study of ancient architecture carried out by Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin" in order to better appreciate and understand the ancient architectural culture and achievements of Shanxi.

During the dialogue, attendees discussed how Chinese interior designers preserve and develop traditional architectural culture in their designs. It was proposed that Chinese designers should combine traditional culture with modern styles , and Chinese styles with Western styles.
