US algologist gives talk to SXU students

Kociolek J. Patrick, professor at the University of Colorado in the United States, visited the College of Life Sciences of Shanxi University (SXU) on May 22, where he delivered a lecture titled “Freshwater Diatom Biogeography” to lecturers and students.

Professor Patrick introduced the latest research progress and achievements on freshwater diatoms in the perspective of biogeography.

As an internationally-renowned algologist, the professor mainly focuses on studying the classification, phylogeny and geographical distribution of freshwater diatoms, and the selection and utilization of energy microalgae.

Over the past 30 years, Professor Patrick has published more than 300 papers and more than 10 books. He was also the former curator of the California Academy of Sciences and is a senior editor of the Journal of Phycology and Diatom Research.
