A ceremony to mark the awarding of grants to college students from disadvantaged backgrounds was held at Shanxi University in Taiyuan on Dec 28, during which 500,000 yuan ($76,600) was distributed among 130 students thanks to a donation from Shanxi Kunming Tobacco Co Ltd.

To guarantee a transparent funding process, the university and the company conducted a detailed assessment of each student’s needs, and, after much deliberation, 30 students received 5,000 yuan, 50 received 4,000 yuan, and 50 received 3,000 yuan.
