The Contemporary Gongbi Painting Nomination Exhibition commenced at the Wuxi Academy of Calligraphy and Painting and Aesthetic Space in Jiangsu on April 9, and will run until May 26.

Gongbi painting, referred to in English as elaborate-style painting or traditional Chinese realistic painting, is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. It is particularly favored for its realistic technique and bold coloring.

The exhibition displays 43 artworks by 15 young Chinese artists, all showing great potential in elaborate-style painting. These artists bring innovative flair to the traditional Chinese painting style by blending modern images into traditional flowers and birds.

Zhou Qingfu, president of the Chinese National Academy of Arts, believes that the exhibition showcases the highest level of the elaborate-style paintings by young artists. He expressed hope that young artists will create more outstanding works in the future.

Zhang Jian, director of the Gongbi Academy at the Chinese National Academy of Arts, praised the art show for its inclusivity and contemporary relevance.
