Wuxi in East China's Jiangsu province has seen a strong recovery in tourism as it received more than 3.7 million tourists during the five-day May Day holiday that ended May 5, according to local authorities.

The figure marks an 84.28-percent surge over the same period last year and is up 19.43 percent over pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to the Jiangsu provincial smart culture and tourism platform.

The city brought in a total of 1.5 billion yuan ($18.5 million) in tourism spending during the holiday, an increase of 62.31 percent year-on-year, according to officials.

Revolutionary sites were popular during the May Day holiday. Xinwu district provided a bus route that passed by four red tourism sites including Taibo Temple and Meicun Erhu Cultural Park. A series of art exhibitions marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China was also popular among visitors.

Tourist attractions in the city announced various ticket discounts and special events before the holiday, attracting many tourists to Wuxi.

Donglin Academy received 3,000 tourists per day by holding unique local performances such as Wuxi opera, folk music shows, and story narrations.

To deal with the continued increase of visitors, tourist attractions in Wuxi took measures to control the number of daily visitors during the holiday. In addition, the city fully adhered to COVID-19 protection measures to ensure public safety.
