Located at No 30 and 32 Xinjie Lane, Wuxi, Qian Zhongshu's former residence was an ancestral property of the Qian family.
Renowned as a great master of culture, Qian Zhongshu spent his boyhood at the residence.
Covering about 1,600 square meters, it was built by Qian's grandfather in 1923 and additions constructed by his uncle in 1926. The characteristics of Ming and Qing dynasties architecture and Western architecture are perfectly integrated in this building. Qian’s grandfather named the house Sheng Wu Tang to encourage descendants to study hard and live in harmony. Qian spent his childhood and youth there, deeply impressed by the noble and enterprising family.
