Rolex and Heritage

Updated: 2016-04-05

Rolex's links to motor racing and speed reach back to the 1930s when Sir Malcolm Campbell broke the 300-mile per hour barrier at the wheel of his World Land Speed Record car, Bluebird, with a Rolex on his wrist. Rolex has since maintained an appreciation for motor sport tradition and heritage, hence the brand's close ties to the Monterey Classic Car Week and Goodwood Revival. Both events are a glorious step back in time, enjoyed by automobile enthusiasts worldwide. They offer a unique opportunity to relive the Golden Age of motor sport and celebrate the style and beauty of a forgotten era, as well as the sport's heroes, including Rolex Testimonee Sir Jackie Stewart.

MONTEREY CLASSIC CAR WEEK

The Monterey Classic Car Week provides an opportunity to honour motor sport heritage, featuring concours, tours, racing and auctions. Rolex is involved with several events during the week: Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance presented by Rolex, The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering and The Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion. These events are linked by a common theme: a passion for and dedication to preserving the history and tradition of crafted vehicles that are no less exceptional today than when they were first created. Each event, in its own unique way, presents the constant evolution of motor sport.

Over the course of the week, event-goers can share their enthusiasm for the history of the automobile and reflect on the inventiveness and creativity of the designers and manufacturers. Rolex has been deeply involved in the Monterey Classic Car Week since 1997, sharing values of tradition and innovation that have shaped quality watchmaking as much as the automotive world.

Sir Jackie Stewart, the Formula 1 legend, long-term Rolex Testimonee and former guest of honour at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, emphasizes the parallels between Rolex's values and those at Monterey: "The events are all about elegance; the cars that race, as well as those that are on display, represent the ultimate in motor sport aesthetics, forever loved by the people who buy them, who restore them, and who show them. These people want the best, the most stylish, the most accurate; they are precision-driven with excellent taste."

PEBBLE BEACH

The Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance presented by Rolex and the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance are both deeply rooted in the fine tradition of automotive events on the Monterey Peninsula. Initiated to showcase the elegance of the automobile in motion, the Tour also underscores the early history of Pebble Beach. The Concours was first held in 1950 as an adjunct to the Pebble Beach Road Race. It has been staged on the 18th fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf Links between The Lodge and the Pacific Ocean overlooking Carmel Bay since 1952. The Tour presented by Rolex has been held since 1998, and is a tribute to the original Road Race, last held in 1956. Rolex has been the Official Timepiece of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and partner to The Lodge at Pebble Beach since 1997 and has presented The Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance since 2007.

THE QUAIL

The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering is the crown jewel in a whirlwind of events over the Monterey Classic Car week and is reminiscent of the earliest, more intimate days of the Concours. It too is hosted on a golf course, the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, against the picturesque backdrop of the Santa Lucia mountain range. Since its inception in 2003, the event has combined elegance, exceptional vintage sporting automobiles and a true culinary experience. Rolex has been the Official Timepiece of The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering since 2005.

ROLEX MONTEREY MOTORSPORTS REUNION

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, staged at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, provides robust racing on a demanding circuit. It may not feature the wooded landscape of the original Road Race, but turns such as the notorious five-storey drop Corkscrew make this a worthy successor and spectacular venue for those who believe vintage race cars should still be raced whatever their rarity or perceived value. Rolex partnered the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races, which took place at the same venue between 2001 and 2009, before becoming Title Sponsor of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in 2010.

GOODWOOD REVIVAL

The Goodwood Revival is a romantic time capsule of the Golden Era, a magical step back in time to the motor racing at Goodwood Motor Circuit in the UK. The Revival is one of the world’s most popular historic motor race meeting and the only event of its kind to be staged entirely in the spirit of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. First held in 1998, the Revival is the largest historic motor racing celebration of the year and the majority of visitors go to great lengths to dress in appropriate period clothing.

Rolex has been associated with the Goodwood Revival since 2004, when the leading Swiss watchmaker first supported the Drivers' Club, described by one leading driver as "the heart of the paddock". A crucial element of the Revival's success, the Drivers' Club provides a sanctuary to the many drivers and their families, many of whom will have travelled from around the world to enjoy the thrills of this hugely entertaining weekend.

Historic racing cars, many valued in the millions of pounds, are paraded alongside the highest quality of competitive racing. The drivers, all determined to be first to the chequered flag, will also be looking to catch the attention of the judges who award the Rolex Driver of the Meeting Award. The Earl of March's eagerly awaited announcement at the prize-giving ceremony on the Race Control balcony concludes the Goodwood race weekend. The winner receives a specially engraved Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust, originally introduced in 1945, and one of the world's most recognizable watches. Admired for its classic design, the Datejust has become an iconic symbol of style, making it a fitting reward for excellence at the Goodwood Revival.
