The expressway stretches from Huangyang Avenue in the north to Zhufeng Avenue in the south Bounded by the Hongxing Road, the project will be constructed over two phases. The TJ1 section, northern part of the expressway, will span 3.9 km (2.4 miles) to connect the Western Coastal Expressway, Township Road Y613, Longjing and West Gangxia roads, Jing'an Reservoir, and Hongxing Road.

The first phase features overpasses, tunnels, and ground ramps. Its two-way six-lane main road as a viaduct has a designated speed limit of 60 kmph (37 mph) while the two-lane ramps in both directions will be designed with a speed limit of 40 kmph (25 mph).
Yang Shenghua of Doumen Transport Bureau noted that the expressway avoids the busiest roads in downtown Doumen and relieves pressure of the current main artery of Zhongxing Road during rush hours.
The North Airport Expressway is a vital part of Zhuhai's "Eight Horizontal & Eleven Vertical" skeleton road network connecting Doumen and Jinwan districts as well as Zhuhai (Jinwan) Airport. It will facilitate local transportation and stimulate the development of industries in Doumen District.
