Ground was broken Sept 23 for Hengqin New Area's first Grade-III Class-A public hospital, which is located near the under-construction International Life Science Center.

Hengqin Hospital of the 1st Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University (Hengqin New Area Central Hospital) is sited on 60,000 sqm (14.8 acres) between Caihong (Rainbow) Road, Hengqin Avenue, and South Boya Avenue.

The 500-bed compressive hospital will provide medical treatment, healthcare, scientific research, and education. It will have emergency, outpatient, and inpatient departments, medical laboratories, scientific research rooms, and emergency center to meet the demands of basic medical treatment and major/sudden public health events in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

It is being developed by the local Administrative Committee at a cost of 2.7 billion yuan ($396 million). With floorage of 190,000 sqm (47 acres), the facility will face west.

According to Zhuhai Da Heng Qin Property Development, the main part of the complex is to be a half-moon-shaped structure surrounded by functional buildings. A riverside footpath will connect the architectural cluster, while rooftop and hanging gardens, green-plant corridor, weatherproof spaces, and central waterfall will enrich the multi-level interior landscape.

The hospital will be entrusted to the 1st Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University for operation and management by the end of 2023, said an official of local Administrate Committee.

Nearby, the Hengqin Zhihe International Life Science Center is being built by Zhuhai Zhihe Health Industry Holdings for 4.5 billion yuan ($660 million). It will encompass five specialized hospitals as well as a healthcare park comprising an international elder care community, and centers for anti-aging, healthcare management, international academic exchange, and sci-tech R&D.

Zhong Nanshan, a leading respiratory disease expert and Medal of the Republic recipient, attended the hospital groundbreaking ceremony. He pointed out in a speech the livability of Zhuhai, prospects for Hengqin, and prominent anti-epidemic achievements made under Zhuhai-Macao supervision.
