The Ministry of Education recently announced the seventh list of Provincial Universities Targeted Support Model Projects. Yunnan University's initiative, Harnessing Science to Protect Red Soil: Soil Conservation for Rural Vitalization and Green Development, was included, marking the fifth consecutive year the university has been recognized.
Focusing on Xinping county in Yuxi, the project addresses soil erosion in red soil regions. Using platforms like the Yuanjiang Dry-Hot Valley Soil Conservation Observation Station and the Provincial Key Laboratory for Soil Conservation, Yunnan University partnered with local governments and leading agricultural enterprises to form a collaborative government-enterprise-university alliance. The team introduced innovative soil conservation techniques, including contour farming and citrus orchard soil mats, which significantly reduced erosion while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

In addition to technical advancements, the project supports talent cultivation and industry-academic collaboration. Initiatives such as the establishment of the Yunnan Modern Soil Conservation Academy and the hosting of hands-on training sessions have benefited over 500 local agricultural practitioners, driving both ecological and economic growth.
With its ongoing contributions to rural vitalization and green development, Yunnan University continues to be a trailblazer in sustainable solutions for highland ecosystems.
