Recently, The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Health Commission jointly released the first batch of pilot projects for the "Broadband Networks Helps Rural Areas" initiative. The "Yunnan University Remote Medical Platform Project" was part of this selection.
In July 2023, the "Broadband Networks Helps Rural Areas" initiative was launched nationwide, aiming to leverage the advantages of new generation information and communication technology. It focuses on expanding intelligent medical and health applications, as well as enhancing health services in rural areas.
The Yunnan University Remote Medical Platform Project was developed by Professor Zheng Jialiang's team from the School of Physics and Astronomy at Yunnan University (YNU) in Kunming, capital city of Southwest China's Yunnan province.
This project includes linkages between provinces, cities, counties, and villages. It integrates resources and technology, systematic open services, data, and the application of big data and artificial intelligence.
The project was developed with the idea of a "one-click" operation, which will ensure that rural residents can easily grasp how to use the platform. At the same time, by introducing volunteers, services such as consultation, medical assistance, and health management were provided. This opens up a channel for rural residents to access quality medical services.
In 2022, the project received funding from the Yunnan Provincial Development and Reform Commission. Currently, the project has been implemented in over 400 administrative villages in China's frontier areas, with nearly 1,000 volunteers participating in project operations. In addition, the research team has collaborated with more than 30 government agencies, large enterprises, and public institutions in order to serve over 100,000 people cumulatively.
In 2020, the project was honored as one of the Top 50 Volunteer Poverty Alleviation Projects by the State Council, and was awarded the title of Excellent Poverty Alleviation Project by the Ministry of Education.
