Xiangzhou overview

Zhuhai, a core city on the west bank of the Pearl River Estuary, was one of the first four special economic zones in China to adopt the policy of opening-up. Known as the "City of Hundred Islands", Zhuhai has the largest ocean area, the most islands and the longest coastline among cities of the Pearl River Delta region.

Xiangzhou district is the main urban area of Zhuhai, and the only urban area connecting the mainland with Hong Kong and Macao by a land bridge. It is the political, economic, cultural and scientific and technological center of Zhuhai. Xiangzhou has jurisdiction over Gongbei, Jida, Cuixiang, Meihua, Qianshan, Xiangwan, Shishan, Wanzai, Fengshan sub-districts and Nanping town.

Xiangzhou has a subtropical monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of 24℃. The district has rich tourism resources including modern cultural landscapes like the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, Lovers' Road, the Statue of Fisher Girl, Zhuhai Grand Theatre, Yuanmingyuan New Park, the City Lounge, the Urban Balcony, the Love Post Office, Xiangshan Trail and Jingshan Trail; all have become leisure choices for the city’s residents and visitors.

Xiangzhou district has a long history and is an important birthplace of Xiangshan Culture. There are many ancient buildings, ruins, ancestral temples and former residences of celebrities, which are important parts of Xiangshan Culture, Marine Culture and Overseas Chinese Hometown Culture. The district has 36 cultural relic protection units at various levels and was home to a large number of figures who played important roles in modern Chinese history, such as Yung Wing, the first Chinese student to graduate from an American university, Yale College, in 1854; Rong Guotuan, who was China’s first table tennis world champion, and Su Manshu, a writer. Xiangzhou is a microcosm of China's economy and culture moving from the mainland to the sea.

Xiangzhou attaches great importance to forward-looking planning of high-quality coordinated tourism development. In recent years, the district has increased investment in tourism project development, tourism public service platform building, transportation construction, and tourism management upgrading, and has been gradually improving service facilities in scenic spots. Today, it boasts tourist attractions such as Lovers' Road, Gongbei Port, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, and City Park. The three-dimensional tourism transportation network of highway, waterways, high-speed rail and air has been gradually improved. Tourist satisfaction has been rising year by year, and ranks among the highest in China.

In May 2014, Xiangzhou district was awarded the honorary title of "National Ecological Civilization Construction Demonstration Zone". In June 2020, it was rated as an All-region Tourism Demonstration Zone of Guangdong Province. Today, Xiangzhou is racing toward its goal of becoming a high-quality economic integration area.
