Hi City commercial complex on Yeli Island has begun charging parking fees at certain times in order to cope with too many cars, especially during official holidays. Zhuhai Opera House will soon do likewise.

According to a Hi City manager, Yeli Island receives up to 90,000 vehicles each month, and thousands of cars daily. But Hi City has just 600 and Zhuhai Opera House only 200 parking spaces.

Parking remains free Monday to Thursday from 7 am to 2 the next morning. During weekends and holidays, parking is free for one hour only. After that, the charge is 5 yuan (74 cents) for each additional hour or part thereof. The maximum charge for any given 24-hour period is 100 yuan ($15).

Those with Hi City membership can park free for three hours. After that, membership points can be redeemed for additional parking time.

Parking fees can be paid by scanning the presented QR code after license plate numbers are automatically entered.

The trial operation is collecting data to improve the collection system. Later, all parking spaces on the island will come under unified management.
