Tsinghua University alumni from places like Shenzhen and Macao showcased their projects in a Zhuhai roadshow competition held exclusively for them on March 21.

At the Innovation, Creativity, Entrepreneurship Competition, more than 200 contestants including Tsinghua entrepreneurs and startups displayed 13 projects that ranged from artificial intelligence to integrated circuits, aerospace and big health.

Six projects qualified for the quarter finals in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. A Zhuhai project showcasing a new-type of processor using groundbreaking chip technology won the first prize. Zhuhai Longhua Helicopters’ latest product and another product targeting respiratory illness shared the second prize.

The event was guided by the Alumni Association of Tsinghua University and sponsored by the association's Zhuhai branch.

In recent years, Zhuhai has made remarkable progress in the development of strategic emerging industries, which has led to long-term socioeconomic development with crucial technical breakthroughs. Such industries usually consume fewer materials but present greater growth potential while generating considerable comprehensive benefits. They require intensive input of intellect and technology.

In 2018, the added value of six major industries in Zhuhai -- electronic information, household electrical appliances, petrochemical engineering, electrical energy, biomedicine, and precision machine manufacturing -- reached 74.44 billion yuan ($11.08 billion), accounting for 69 percent of the value added of all Zhuhai industrial enterprises above designated size.

The value added of electronic information and biomedicine industries increased 7.2 percent and 23.5 percent to 20.4 billion yuan and 5.2 billion yuan. The value added of the advanced manufacturing industry surged 11.2 percent to 59.5 billion yuan. These results are clear evidence of the greater role strategic emerging industries are playing in local economic development.

The city is actively developing a new information technology industrial cluster covering big data and artificial intelligence. It is also eyeing a biomedicine industry belt that coordinates development of the biomedicine hub, Jinwan District, and that of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Science & Technology Industrial Park of Cooperation Between Guangdong & Macao in Hengqin New Area. Zhuhai has also shown impressive achievements in fields like aviation and high end manufacturing.
