A delegation composed of members of the Yucatan Peninsula Overseas Chinese Association and leaders from Texas Southern University in Mexico has recently visited Xiangzhou District, Zhuhai.

With the aim of establishing a sister city relationship between Xiangzhou and Cancun, the delegation came to scout further cooperation possibilities in business, education, culture, and economics. Their touring of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Zhuhai Port, Zhuhai Opera House, the iconic Maiden Fisher statue, and other landmarks on Jan 31 gave them a glimpse into the rapid development of Zhuhai, particularly Xiangzhou.

The visit follows last year's visit by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Bureau of Zhuhai, which sought to arrange for Mexican teens of Chinese descent to visit their hometowns in China.

The history of Chinese immigration to Mexico is relatively long. According to records, there was already a Chinatown in Mexico as early as the end of the 16th century. Mexico currently has more than 400,000 ethnic Chinese and is home to more than 80,000 overseas Chinese. The reputed Yucatan Peninsula Overseas Chinese Association is dedicated to promoting exchanges and cooperation between Mexico and China in the fields of economics, trade, culture, education, tourism, agriculture, and more. It also promotes Chinese language-learning among Mexican students interested in Chinese culture.
