The 2018 Craftsmen in Xiangzhou Competition was announced for July 28 at Nanping Sci-tech Industrial Park, Xiangzhou District, with some 140 skilled workers attending the launch ceremony.

It is the third time that Xiangzhou has held its signature annual vocational skills contest, which attracts more skillful personnel to the region and promotes the spirit of craftsmanship.

This year's event, sponsored by the Xiangzhou district government, is reported to be the largest ever and shows innovative improvements in structure and competing items, according to the organizer.

Targeting industrial development in Xiangzhou, techniques related to the high-end manufacturing industry such as CNC lathing, commercial art design, and mechanical and electrical maintenance are included in this year's competition, adding to the more traditional items of milling, fork lift operation, printing consumables and pastry making.

The inclusion of the public service and landscaping industries allows more front-line workers to enter in any category they are skilled in and offers a good platform for workers from all walks of life.

The organizer will invest heavily to attract more participants this year, with each winner taking home 5,000 yuan ($738) and an honorary certificate. Qualified standouts will also receive national professional qualification certificates.

The competition is now open for registration and all applications should be submitted before Aug 15. Participants can follow WeChat account zhxzjyydt and enroll in the two-month long competition.

The awards ceremony will be held in late September after completion of preliminary and final rounds.
