A floating contribution rate for employment injury insurance entered into effect on June 1 in Zhuhai, Guangdong province. 

Under the system, the rate varies depending on the activity of the employing units. Those experiencing frequent accidents and or disease must pay higher fees; those with good safety records pay less.

The average premium rate decreases to 0.134 percent from the previous 0.18 percent, the lowest across the province.

The change is estimated to cut down expenses of around 21 million yuan ($3.27 million) every year for local employers.

Enterprises of all types have the responsibility to protect their work force from injury and workplace risks, according to the International Labor Organization.

The new system currently covers around 74,100 insured employing units who participate in social medical insurance.
