Xiangzhou District in Zhuhai city has recently been accelerating village renovation as part of its urban renewal, Zhuhai Daily reported on April 13.
The landmark project of the Hong Kong - Zhuhai - Macao Bridge makes Hongwan village, which has been somewhat economically lax due to its desolate location, a window for Zhuhai to the outside world.
To improve local people's living conditions, as well as upgrade the city generally, the local government is pressing ahead with renovations in villages like Hongwan.
"The improved living environment and better education for children are worth the demolition and temporary inconvenience although it feels hard to leave," said a local surnamed Zhang, in his 60s.
The disorderly and humble houses at Hongwan village will soon be replaced by comfortable residences equipped with convenient facilities.
Other villages in Xiangzhou District have also been undergoing reconstruction and have progressed well. Lixi, Fuxi and Haiwan villages have basically completed construction of residential buildings for local villagers.
New apartments in Lixi and Fuxi are now undergoing interior decoration, while the first phase of the Haiwan village renovation project has been finished and 74 families have reclaimed their suites.
The Xiangzhou District government will continue to advance village renovation through scientific planning and good communication with local residents in a bid to speed up urban development.
