More than 500 big data experts and industry players gathered in Zhuhai to explore more possibilities of the technology and learn about advanced management ideas at a forum held at the Zhuhai Opera House on March 27.

The forum, sponsored by China Mobile Group Guangdong Co Ltd, was themed on the company's big data platform and its application in smart city construction. Participating were scholars and entrepreneurs from 16 cities who have achieved some success in the industry but want to stay updated.

Huang Xiaoqing, deputy director of the Chinese Institute of Electronics, interpreted the technical features of cutting-edge research results. Huang suggested a combination of a cloud computing platform and artificial intelligence, the former functioning as a "brain" to do data analysis while the latter guides the "body" to do specific operations. Also important would be a high-speed network constituting the "nervous system" necessary for a complete artificial robot – the ultimate product Huang envisioned.

A discussion of practical cases gave more concrete guidance to the audience. Chen Yajuan, general manager of the Data and Product R&D Center of China Mobile Group Guangdong Co Ltd, mentioned that China Mobile Guangdong is the largest telecom operator in the province with more than 100 million customers. They generate a combined daily data volume of 300TB, a number that is growing exponentially.

Using the mass data, the company is able to provide precise analysis for policy makers. Success of the data utilization is evident in sectors such as tourism, urban construction, and business marketing and sales. Data analysis even helped handle the Spring Festival peak travel period.

The big data application innovation center built by China Mobile Guangdong for the province was erected in Zhuhai in September of last year. It has supported more than 100 government and business projects, and was quickly duplicated throughout Guangdong.
