A profusion of lovely flowers, including 30,000 sq m of cosmos, will bloom across the Xiangshan Lake Park being built in Xiangzhou District in March to greet the arrival of spring.

Under construction at the southwest corner of Fenghuang Mt, the Xiangzhou Lake Park covers an area of about 3 sq km, stretching 600 m from south to north, and about 2.7 km long from east to west.

The 120 million yuan ($18.5 million) project as part of the Phase I of the Fenghuang Mt Forest Park directly accesses Zhuhai downtown and affords a view of a 3.5-km urban landscape belt.

Before the construction is completely over before this year's end, park managers have decided to advance the natural beauty to delight both visitors and nearby residents.

According to a staff member, in addition to various types of flowers to adorn pathways and children's play areas, Guangdong's local varieties of cosmos have been planted on a 30,000-sq-m sloping field that has been leveled out.

More than 10 varieties have been selected due to their long flowering period, about two to three months annually. Covered with plastic sheets, the flower seeds are able to handle frost and are expected to create a colorful garden perpetually in bloom.

The plantation follows the park's design principles which underline harmonious and sustainable development, ecological restoration, economical efficiency, and safety.

Works are still being made on the park's riverside leisure, ecological transition, mountain & plain cultural areas. Underway are landscape engineering and installation of pipelines, lights, safety supervision facilities, and other components.
