Street corner beautified for leisure

Residents in Shishan sub-district of Xiangzhou in Zhuhai are delighting in the pleasant landscape and improved public service brought about by the district's pilot beautification project which completed on Nov 30.

Shishan was the first to be given a facelift consisting of a pavilion done in an ancient Chinese architectural style and a small wooden house for book exchanges and garden ornaments. Walls on the side of Guanghua Street have also been freshly painted with depictions of Shishan's history.

Children were excited by the first-of-its-kind book-sharing corner set up on an open street corner in Xiangzhou. Some of them brought their own books and picked out others they liked in exchange.

The program will provide Gongbei and Jida sub-districts with similar attractions, and, if successful, will be rolled out across the whole district, according to an official.

The government is gathering opinions from city designers, architects, university students and residents to provide an optimal layout for the project.
