Xiangzhou held the seventh edition of its annual chorus contest on Nov 18 in which more than 1,000 middle-aged and elderly people in 23 choruses competed for top honors.
Participants were picked out from outstanding choruses based on a sub-district selection, with some recommended from community colleges for the elderly.
With traditional indigenous art forms encouraged, most contestants chose to highlight the main themes of the times combining Zhuhai local characteristics. Some of the city's most familiar elements such as the Wanshan Archipelago and beautiful seasonal sceneries were added to original works.
Winning first prizes were Xiangwan Art Troupe, Xiangzhou Overtone Female Choir, and Gongbei Chamber Choir with acclaim given to their The Joy of Snow Flake, Droma, and The Descendent of Dragon, respectively.
The competition also produced five second prizes and seven third prizes, and eight troupes were granted with awards of excellence. Top 10 choruses were presented certificates.
The Publicity Department of CPC Xiangzhou District Committee, the Culture, Sports & Tourism Bureau of Xiangzhou District, the Xiangzhou Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and the Bureau of Retired Veteran Cadres of CPC Xiangzhou District Committee sponsored the contest.
The brand event has been included in Xiangzhou's year-round public activity series, which has been held for the second time and featured paintings in summer, dancing in autumn and songs in winter.
An awards ceremony is held at the Center Theater of New Yuanming Palace on Nov 18 for prize winners at the seventh edition of Xiangzhou's annual chorus contest.
