A large stretch of sea separates the students at Xiangzhou District's Jinzhong Primary School and their peers at Guishan Primary School in the Wanshan Marine Development Experimental Zone. But on May 22-23, the students studied together using a video projection system.

Famous teachers and academic leaders from Zhuhai's Xiangzhou District gave Chinese, mathematics and English lessons to both sets of pupils using the futuristic new system.

Xiangzhou District has been experimenting with innovative teaching methods for a while now. Jinzhong Primary School's English teacher, Wei Li, previously made headlines after her recorded online lessons became popular and they were used in classrooms across the city.

This was the first time students at Guishan Primary School had been exposed to virtual teaching, and they appeared to relish the new lesson style and were particularly keen to interact with their new e-teachers.

"The teaching method has extended the view and communication range of our students, who will benefit a lot in their future development," said Ye Zhiqing, the school's principal.

Students at Guishan school will have plenty more opportunities to try out modern lessons in the future, as the school has now been added to Xiangzhou District's intelligent school system, which promotes resource sharing and joint research projects among local schools.

Schools across Wanshan are also working to improve their classroom facilities to ensure remote lessons are accessible to every student in the future.

According to Li Zili, director of Xiangzhou's scientific research training center, the new style of education is a great example of China's "Internet Plus" strategy beginning to bear fruit and is a model for educators across the country. The district will carry out more such cooperation to share quality education resources with the most needed.
