The Xianglu Bay Beach around Xiangzhou recently became the only winner from Zhuhai to receive the Livable Environment Example Award for 2016 in Guangdong Province.

The award was presented by the Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of Guangdong Province in recognition of positive environmental improvements, creative sand recycling, ecological protection and green construction seen in the area.

The 1.5 km bay received restorative construction from Gree Real Estate last year. Several hundred thousand cubic meters of sand used for paving and filling was repurposed from the excavation construction at Zhuhai port for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

The renewal brought the beach a 15m wide green belt along Lovers Avenue and many other leisure amenities over the 30,000 sq m area.

According to analysis, it costs 60 million yuan ($8.7 million) to 100 million yuan ($14.5 million) per kilometer to rehabilitate a beach of similar size. The whole restoration of Xianglu Bay Beach, however, only took just over 20 million yuan ($193,153).

After the structural upgrade of the breakwater, very limited typhoon damage will be done to Lovers Avenue, according to project leaders.

Reopened last New Year's Day, the beach proved incredibly popular among locals and travelers with its fresh landscape design. According to statistics, the number of visitors on the opening day hit 60,000.
