Zhejiang and Fujian teams each garnered three trophies at award presentations for the 2016 National Sailing Championships that were held on Xianglu Bay in Xiangzhou last week. Teams from Hainan, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Shandong were awarded one trophy each at the Zhuhai Holiday Resort Hotel on Oct 23.

The six-day sailing fiesta had five Olympics standard events – Men’s and Women’s 470 (double-handed monohull planing dinghy) classes, Men’s Laser, Women’s Laser Radial (one-person dinghy), and Men’s Finn (one-person heavyweight dinghy).
The annual event, founded in 2011, is one of the country’s largest and most influential sporting events. Sixteen teams from various provinces, autonomous regions, cities, and the People’s Liberation Army vied in the elite aquatics competition this year.

At the awards ceremony, Li Quanhai, director of the General Administration of Sports of the China Aquatic Sports Management Center, said he expects Zhuhai to host more such competitions, taking advantage of coastal resources and industrial strength to promote national water sports, develop training bases, and nurture professionals.
Deputy Mayor Long Guangyan said that the city will seek additional sailing competitions with high goals and standards to manifest the charm of a coastal leisure location and provide larger space for multi-dimensional development of the local yachting and sailboat industries.
