Statistics show that 2.06 million tourists spent 1.14 billion yuan ($171 million) during the week starting Oct 1, a year-on-year growth of 12.7 percent. Meanwhile, the number of overnight visitors grew by 14.4 percent to 493,600, and the average hotel room rates increased by 4.8 percent to 591 yuan ($89) this year. Higher numbers for tourists, revenue, and overnight guests were 15.8, 9.1 and 10.8 percentage points respectively over last year.

Attractions such as Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, Ocean Spring Resort, Imperial Hot Springs, the Fisher Maiden statue, and Golden Beach, and events such as the Zhuhai International Beach Music Festival 2016 in Xiangzhou District, 2016 Doumen Food Festival, and carnival activities in Jinwan District were highlights for holiday revelers from the Pearl River Delta, Hong Kong and Macao, the Yangtze River Delta, and major cities along high-speed rail lines including Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Changsha, Wuhan, and Nanning.

Specialized draws including the world’s largest jellyfish tank and highest evening float, and two newly born emperor penguins at Chimelong Ocean Kingdom helped lure tourists, as did themed activities such as Mediterranean Festivity at Ocean Spring Resort, and Zhuhai’s first large-scale magic-scene play at the New Yuanming Palace.
