The 2016 Xiangzhou Craftsmen Competition, which attracted more than 270 participants to compete in six events related to maintenance and operations, came to a close on Sept 25 at the Nanping Science and Technology Park.

Electricians, automobile mechanics, office software operators, and other workers with mastery over niche skills after years of practice in Xiangzhou District of Zhuhai had the opportunity to show off their abilities during the two-month-long series of activities.

The eight best ones came out as titlists, with two of them plus other four participants named “Xiangzhou Technical Experts”.

Yu Rongzan, 37, who took a first place finish, has been doing vehicle maintenance and repair for a decade. He not only won high scores in theory tests but also shocked the judges and audiences with a great technical performance. The panel repair task only took him 30 minutes, and he finished the welding task within an hour.

Zhuhai lacks first-class technicians, said Chen Jiashen, a teacher at a local training school for auto mechanics. Mechanics who are good at high-tech materials repair are in great demand.
