A baking competition was held in Xiangzhou on Aug 31, where some 44 of the district's best bakers sought to rise to the challenge and be crowned king of cakes.

The finalists had to first pass a theory test before heating up their ovens to bake their pies, tarts and cakes.

Lu Youlin came out on top and was awarded as a Zhuhai Technical Expert by the Zhuhai Human Resources & Social Security Bureau and given 3,000 yuan ($449.6) in prize money. Another five winners were also acknowledged with certificates for their efforts.

Judges had the enviable task of choosing a winner based on taste, smell, texture, appearance, and freshness.

The event was held as a part of a series of vocational skills competitions facing the whole city to cultivate professionals and talents, and bolster innovative economies. A competition for nursing assistants for the elderly and bartenders will be held on Sept 10 and Sept 25, respectively.
