A massive, heavy-lift ship called the Herbert, made by the Chinese-Polish Joint Stock Shipping, set off from Tianjin Port on its maiden voyage to Uddevalla in Sweden on March 1.

The ship, which has a load capacity of 62,000 metric tons, is carrying 174 wind power units made by wind engineering company Siemens Gamesa, including nacelles (cover housings), hubs and accessories, with a total volume of 3,056 cubic meters.

The Herbert is 199.9 meters long, 32.26 meters wide and has a draft of 13.5 meters. Its 166m x 30m hold is equivalent in size to 14 basketball courts.

The shipbuilder was established in June 1951 as the first joint venture company created after the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Tianjin Port said the voyage of the Herbert reflects its commitment to green power development and its deep collaboration with leading shipping and wind power companies.

The frequent arrival of some of the world's biggest ships at Tianjin indicates the port's position as one of the world's top 10 ports in terms of loading capacity, as well as its green, high-tech commitment.

"Our main objective is to make Tianjin Port an environmentally friendly and smart facility," said Chu Bin, Party chief and chairman of the Tianjin Port Group board.

By 2025, the port expects to reach a handling capacity of 25 million twenty-foot equivalent units, he said.

"By applying 5G networks, the Beidou Navigation Satellite System, artificial intelligence, and blockchain technologies to its development, and making the Section C intelligent container terminal a pioneer in the global port industry's smart advancement, Tianjin Port expects to set a benchmark for smart port transformation worldwide," Chu said.

"In the future, Tianjin Port will endeavor to fulfill a 6-percent increase in annual container throughput."

Located on the Bohai Sea, Tianjin is the pivotal port for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. It currently has 192 berths, 128 of which can accommodate vessels weighing over 10,000 tons. It operates 133 cargo routes, extending trade ties to more than 800 ports in more than 200 countries and regions.

In January, over 60 percent of its cargo throughput was delivered to countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative. Last year, the container throughput of the port set a new annual record surpassing 20 million TEUs.
