Tianjin has lit up its main buildings in a salute to ten of the city’s heroes, who put themselves in harm’s way during the fight against the COVID-19 outbreak.

As the port city saw the last of of its 133 COVID-19 patients cured and discharged from hospital yesterday, the people behind the medical effort are the ones deserving public appreciation.

Over 10,000 electronic tickers citywide, including on landmark buildings, business complexes, urban and rural communities, and public transport stations, started to display their faces and stories on March 13.

The ten brave heroes are all medical staff in Tianjin who fought on the front line of the battle against the epidemic.

Their names are Zhang Boli, Lu Wei, Wu Qi, Xu Lei, Xu Weiguo, Wang Ying, Yu Hongzhi, Li Jianguo, Li Rongmei, Zhang Yuan.

They include the leader of the Tianjin medical team which went to assist the center of the epidemic in Wuhan; medical workers protecting local residents; and an expert who left his family to protect virus patients.

The ten were selected to represent the mass of medical workers behind the scenes who have been fighting in this smoke-free war, and the gesture is intended to display the great gratitude and love felt in the city for these life savers.

The buildings are also lit up with messages of best wishes from Tianjin to the city for Wuhan and to the whole country.
