Xiamen demonstrates comprehensive strength, statistics show

Over the past year, Xiamen in Fujian province has made remarkable efforts in boosting the high-quality development of its economy and emerging industries, as well as improved people's livelihoods and the urban environment in all aspects, according to the 2022 Statistical Bulletin on the Economic and Social Development of Xiamen released by the Xiamen bureau of statistics and the Xiamen survey team of the National Bureau of Statistics on March 22.

Data from the statistical bulletin show that Xiamen's gross domestic product (GDP) reached 780.27 billion yuan ($113.41 billion) last year, up 4.4 percent year-on-year, demonstrating the strong resilience and potential of the city's economy. Xiamen launched 325 projects with a total investment of about 1 billion yuan. Its fixed-asset investment totaled 297.11 billion yuan, up 10.2 percent year-on-year, while its investment in education and healthcare surged by 12.3 percent and 13.8 percent respectively.

Emerging growth momentum

The statistical bulletin shows that Xiamen has promoted high-quality development in strategic emerging industries, new products, and services. Last year, the output value of its new energy and new materials industries increased by 40.7 percent and 16.4 percent respectively, while its output of lithium-ion batteries and new energy vehicles jumped by 1.3 times and 45.9 percent. The operating income of its information transmission, software, and information technology services grew by 15.1 percent.

The value-added industrial output of its high-tech manufacturing accounted for more than 40 percent of the total output generated by industries above designated size last year. Its foreign trade value reached 922.56 billion yuan, up 4 percent over the previous year.

People's livelihoods and well-being

Last year, the per capita disposable income of urban residents in Xiamen reached 70,500 yuan, up 4.9 percent year-on-year, and the per capita disposable income of rural residents was 32,300 yuan, up 8.1 percent year-on-year.

The city continues to improve people's livelihoods in such fields as education, medical and healthcare services, as well as social security and employment. Last year, the expenditure on people's livelihoods hit 78.07 billion yuan. A total of 76 kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools were built. The city is home to 2,389 medical institutions. By the end of last year, the total number of people participating in basic medical insurance was 4.71 million.
