The 2024 Belt and Road Intellectual Property Protection Symposium took place in Shanghai on June 13. The event highlighted the critical role of intellectual property (IP) in advancing high-quality trade development of countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Yu Chen, deputy director general of the Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration (SIPA), reiterated the city's commitment to establishing a robust IP framework. He noted that Shanghai, guided by the China National Intellectual Property Administration, has been actively involved in global IP governance and has expanded its cooperation with international IP organizations.

Chen also revealed that SIPA plans to set up overseas IP service stations to assist enterprises in increasing their international competitiveness and cooperation. This initiative aims to foster high-quality trade development among BRI member countries.

A key outcome of the symposium was the signing of a strategic cooperation memorandum between SIPA, the Council for the Promotion of International Trade (Shanghai), and Shanghai University of International Business and Economics. This agreement aims to establish an "Overseas IP Protection Talent Training Base" that will nurture talent in overseas IP protection and bolster BRI-related trade.

Experts and scholars at the symposium discussed various topics, including the integration of overseas IP data and AI development, IP protection in cross-border technology trade, IP arbitration for international business, and strategies for new energy companies in overseas IP layout.
