East China's Shanghai city last year granted 32,900 invention patents, an increase of 35.74 percent year-on-year.

It also received 4,830 PCT international patent applications, up 35.75 percent, the Shanghai 2022 Working Conference on Intellectual Property Systems announced on Jan 25.

In 2021, the number of valid invention patents in Shanghai was 172,000. The number of registered trademarks was 421,000 and the number of valid trademarks was 2.12 million.

In addition, there were 18 registered trademarks of geographical indication – a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation due to that origin – and eight protected products with geographical indications in the city last year.

The conference also laid out the key tasks for the current year, including improving the level of IP protection, promoting the effective use of IP and strengthening the supply of IP services.
