Francis Gurry becomes honorary dean of Shanghai Intl IP College

Francis Gurry, former director-general of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), was recently appointed as honorary dean of the Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property, Tongji University.

The appointment ceremony, attending by Chen Qun, vice-mayor of Shanghai, and Fang Shou'en, Party secretary of Tongji University, was held in Shanghai on Nov 13. Gurry attended the ceremony through video link.

Shen Changyu, the head of China's National Intellectual Property Administration, sent Gurry a letter of congratulations, which highly phrased Gurry as an outstanding leader in promoting global IP development.

Chen Qun said during the ceremony that, in recent years, with Gurry's support, the Shanghai government had signed a memorandum of understanding and a supplementary agreement with WIPO, promoting the landing of a number of IP projects in Shanghai.

Gurry, through video link, expressed his desire to help build Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property become a world-class IP institute.

Rui Wenbiao, director-general of Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration, or SIPA, also attended the ceremony.
