Sheshan Marian Basilica, known as the "Far East's First Church", was built in the 13th year of Emperor Tongzhi's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1874), rebuilt in 1925, and completed construction and opened in November 1935.
Jingzhe Way is also called Stations of the Cross (Via Dolorosa). From West Sheshan Church on the mountainside to Marian Basilica at the mountain top, there is a zigzag footpath.
Halfway up West Sheshan, there is a towering Catholic church. As early as 1844, French missionary Ningue Paul came to Sheshan to investigate the topography for the construction of a church.
