Tour of China, an outdoor summer camp offering travel, study and fun activities for children aged 10-12, got underway on Aug 1 in Shanghai's Sheshan National Tourist Resort.

At the opening ceremony, Yu Weixing, secretary general of Shanghai Women's Federation, kicked off proceedings by warmly welcoming the arrival of 50 campers from Tianjin and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. This speech was followed by a barnstorming street dance performance put on by local children to welcome the campers.

"Tour of China" changes location with each summertime edition. It previously set up camp in Beijing in 2011, Taiwan in 2013 and along the Silk Road in 2015. This year sees it settle on the outskirts of China's most populous city and not far from the recently opened Disneyland amusement park.

A wide range of activities have been planned for the campers including a stroll along the historic Nanjing Road, a night cruise through the city, a walking architectural tour of downtown Shanghai, and a visit to the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. The camp also plans to take advantage of their location within the scenic Sheshan National Tourist Resort and campers will have multiple opportunities to engage with the natural world. They are certainly aided by the wealth of educational services made available by the park, such as well-trained tour guides. Visits to Moon Lake Sculpture Park and Shanghai Astronomical Museum promise to broaden their horizons.

The camp runs from Aug 1 to 25 and is divided into four different sessions, with around 120 children attending each session. The cost for the camp is 2,800 yuan ($421) which includes accommodation, food, transport and any other expenses incurred during the trip.
