China Mobile users in Shanghai were able to make reservations starting yesterday for the first batch of handsets that are compatible with the 4G network.

The first two 4G models available to Shanghai Mobile users are Samsung and Sony.

Shanghai Mobile has offered its latest 4G service packages with the cheapest at 50 yuan (US$8.20) for 600 Megabytes per month since Wednesday.

The service packages are ranked from 600 Megabytes, 1 gigabyte, 2 gigabyte, 3 gigabyte and 5 gigabyte with prices ranging from 50 yuan per month to 180 yuan per month.

Shanghai Mobile also offers additional data package at 10 yuan for 100M traffic.

Shanghai Mobile officials said that 4G packages are more than 20 percent cheaper than its 3G service at the same quantity of flow.

The phone-call service's charge may remain unchanged for 4G users but final decision has not been made.

China last week issued long-awaited 4G licenses to three telecommunications carriers, which would offer mobile Internet access 20 to 50 times faster than the current 3G network and create a new trillion-yuan market for devices and services.

Real-time registered China Mobile users can make a reservation at 17 outlets to buy new handsets to run on the 4G network without changing their phone numbers.

Online reservation will be also available later at Shanghai Mobile's website.
