Yangquan is at the forefront of the green energy revolution, rapidly advancing its energy transition and witnessing a significant shift from coal to sustainable energy sources. This is evident across multiple sectors of the city's burgeoning new energy industry.
In 2024, the Three Gorges Energy Yuxian Photovoltaic Project and the CHN Energy Yuxian 100 MW Photovoltaic Power Project reached full grid capacity. These initiatives breathed new life into Yangquan's renewable energy sector, boosting the city's non-fossil energy consumption by 1.04 percentage points compared to the previous year. They generate an impressive 229 million kilowatt-hours annually, conserving approximately 65,000 metric tons of coal and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by about 180,000 tons.
Yangquan's coal industry is also undergoing a smart transformation thanks to advancements in intelligent mining. The concept of "mining from the surface" is becoming a reality, significantly enhancing green mining practices. By 2024, the advanced coal production capacity in Yangquan had reached 95.8 percent.
The city is committed to "building large, replacing small, eliminating outdated capacity, and establishing before dismantling" to continuously improve its coal-fired units' cleanliness, efficiency, and energy-saving capabilities.
Yangquan has decommissioned 10 inefficient coal-fired units while ensuring a stable and secure supply of electricity and heat. It has also developed six advanced coal-fired units and focused on upgrading existing facilities. Renovations on six units have been completed, enhancing energy conservation, reducing consumption, and improving overall efficiency.
