Taiyuan, capital of North China's Shanxi province, has been boosting an industrial development system highlighting nine key industrial chains, aiming to become a vital national carrier for advanced manufacturing.
1. High-end metal materials industrial chain
Taiyuan has focused on the technological research, development and precision processing of a diverse array of special steels, new magnesium alloys, and other materials. It has a significant comparative advantage in terms of technology, products, and market share, making it a global leader in the special steel industry.
2. Advanced carbon-based materials industrial chain
With the help of Qingxu Fine Chemicals Recycling Industrial Park, Taiyuan has formed multiple deep-processing industrial chains in the chemical industry, reaching the industry benchmark in upstream production and processing.
With the support of Taishan Fiberglass Inc and China National Building Material Group Co, the city has promoted the establishment of a complete industrial chain for high-end carbon fiber and glass fiber, aiming to build a world-leading advanced composite material processing base.
3. Advanced biomaterials and biopharmaceuticals industrial chain
Taiyuan has concentrated on breakthroughs in three major areas: bio-based new materials, recombinant human collagen, and biopharmaceuticals.
All four of the city's core projects related to bio-based new materials have been completed and put into operation. By 2027, Taiyuan aims to build China's first million-metric-ton synthetic biology industrial base and a globally leading high-performance fiber and composite materials industrial base, with an output value exceeding 100 billion yuan ($14.03 billion).
In the recombinant human collagen sector, the city has been developing a complete industrial chain integrating pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and cosmetics and aims to achieve an output value of 10 billion yuan.
In biopharmaceuticals, Taiyuan has focused on developing innovative drugs such as biotechnological drugs and new vaccines.
4. Mining and specialized engineering machinery industrial chain
Taiyuan is home to billion-yuan enterprises such as Taiyuan Heavy Industry Group. With the completion and operation of major projects such as the Taiyuan Intelligent High-end Equipment Industrial Park and the Hydraulic Press Industrial Park, the added value of the city's mining and specialized engineering machinery sector is expected to exceed 50 billion yuan.
5. Transportation and aviation special equipment industrial chain
The transportation and aviation special equipment industrial chain encompasses rail transportation equipment, automobiles and components, and general aviation equipment. Among them, Taiyuan's wheel and turnout machines have a market share of over 70 percent in China. The next step for Taiyuan is to establish a national advanced manufacturing base for rail transportation equipment, focusing on wheel drives, braking, and electronic control systems.
6. Special energy-saving and environmental protection equipment industrial chain
Taiyuan has been focusing on high-efficiency energy-saving equipment, advanced environmental protection equipment, and environmental monitoring systems, and will work to incubate a group of large enterprises with leading technologies and build an influential manufacturing base for energy-saving and environmental protection equipment.

Taiyuan has strong potential in materials and equipment, chip design, and device testing in the semiconductor industry. Its silicon carbide substrates and key equipment sector holds a leading position in China. The city has been building a national base for next-generation semiconductor materials and a supporting chip base with output values expected to exceed 100 billion yuan.

In the field of information technology integration and application, Taiyuan has formed a complete industrial chain from key components to system software, complete machines, and applications. In the field of intelligent terminals, the city possesses industry-leading technologies, with some products enjoying a significant market share.
9. New energy industrial chain
Taiyuan has been accelerating the development of photovoltaics and auxiliary materials, hydrogen energy, and wind energy projects. It is expected to form a photovoltaic industry base with an output value of 300 billion yuan.
