Shanxi advances cultural heritage digitization strategy
Updated: 2025-12-19
Shanxi province has been pursuing a cultural heritage digitization strategy in recent years, focusing on world cultural heritage sites, national treasures, valuable museum collections, and endangered artifacts. This initiative has established a digital resource library for the province's key cultural relics.
Bai Xuebing, deputy director of the Shanxi Culture Relics Bureau, said, "We are utilizing technologies to establish regular health monitoring and a comprehensive protection system, significantly enhancing the safety of cultural relics and their environments."
Platforms like the Shanxi Digital Museum and "Yunchu Yungang" were launched. Technologies such as AR and VR enabled panoramic online presentations of the Yongle Palace murals and Tianlong Mountain Grottoes. The AI-restored mural Chaoyuan Tu from Yongle Palace has revived its 800-year-old rich colors and was showcased at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. This "digital export" of Shanxi's cultural heritage highlights the unique charm of Chinese culture to the world.
The province has also pioneered the "smart guarding + on-site patrol" security management model, recognized by the National Cultural Heritage Administration as one of the "Top 10 Cases of High-Quality Development in Cultural Heritage", effectively establishing a "firewall" against security risks.
Liu Runmin, director of the Shanxi Culture Relics Bureau, emphasized that as Shanxi embarks on the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30), the cultural heritage system will continue to innovate while strengthening protection and utilization, helping Shanxi's heritage shine in the modern era.
