Over the past year, North China's Shanxi province has advanced the "Three-North Shelterbelt Forest" project by completing afforestation of 6.9 million mu (460,000 hectares) and improving 1.57 million mu of grasslands.

The province, which focuses on the planning and layout of northwestern Shanxi, the Taihang Mountains, and the Lyuliang Mountains, has identified 39 key projects for the "Three-North" project. In 2024, it secured 3.4 billion yuan ($465.87 million) in central government's funding to implement comprehensive forestry and grassland management tasks covering 7.82 million mu.

Efforts are underway to advance provincial-level nursery construction and conduct seedling quality inspections, random checks, and law enforcement inspections of tree and grass seedlings. The "Three-North" project's seedling supply-demand coordination meetings have been held to facilitate producing and distributing high-quality seedlings.

In July, Shanxi convened a special meeting to address conflicts between forestry and animal husbandry. Pilot programs prohibiting, rotating, and resting grazing have been launched in four counties to strengthen forest and grassland resource management and livestock industry transformation and cement the achievements of greening efforts.

The Shanxi Forestry and Grassland Bureau will continue to enhance management systems, provide stronger guidance, and deepen the implementation of the "Three-North" project.
