After more than seven years of development, the Shanxi Transformation and Comprehensive Reform Demonstration Zone has emerged as a crucial platform for accelerating the transformation of the resource-based economy and constructing a modern industrial system throughout North China's Shanxi province.

The demonstration zone has steadfastly prioritized high-quality development and propelled the regional GDP from 42.1 billion yuan ($5.77 billion) in 2017 to 93.8 billion yuan in 2023, doubling economic output.

Its three key indicators have surged into the top 30 nationwide – the number of national-level incubators and innovation spaces ranks fourth, the number of high-tech enterprises ranks seventh, and total import and export volume ranks 24th – showcasing a significant leap in comprehensive strength.

The demonstration zone has also reinforced the construction of major innovation platforms, with national-level enterprise technology centers and provincial high-end innovative research institutions accounting for 20 percent and 57 percent of the province, respectively.

The zone has bolstered enterprises as the main driver of technological innovation. It has nurtured 59,000 market entities, including 1,080 high-tech enterprises, representing 26 percent of the provincial total.

Serving as the southern engine for developing the central urban cluster in Shanxi, the zone has implemented 365 infrastructure and public service supporting projects since its establishment, with investments totaling 40.5 billion yuan.

The demonstration zone will strive to become a leading area for innovation-driven development, a model region for green and low-carbon initiatives, and a pioneer in reform and opening-up. It aims to propel high-quality development and deepen comprehensive transformation across the province.
