Shanxi strives to build strong ecological foundation

North China's Shanxi province has been expanding, revitalizing, and protecting greenery to cultivate a strong ecological foundation. The province has undertaken large-scale land-greening initiatives and launched national-level demonstration projects in six cities.

From 2021 to 2024, Shanxi afforested 18.46 million mu (1.23 million hectares) of land, with 19 counties along the Yellow River leading in basic greening.

The province has appointed 33,800 forest chiefs and established a comprehensive system of chiefs at provincial, city, county, township, and village levels to identify responsibilities across the province.

Wildlife conservation has also been a key focus in maintaining ecological security, enhancing biodiversity, and creating a beautiful Shanxi. The province has continuously strengthened the protection of rare and endangered species.

According to the latest survey results, Shanxi is home to 2,743 species of terrestrial wild plants and 543 species of terrestrial wildlife. The ecological environment has continuously improved, and the population of brown-eared pheasants in the province has increased to around 19,000, ranking first nationwide. The population and habitat area of North China leopards have also doubled.

The province prioritizes achieving comprehensive rural vitalization while building a beautiful Shanxi. It has established 44 forest experience bases, forest health bases, and slow leisure experience areas. The province has also organized forest tourism festivals and connected 59 forest health tourism sites into 10 premium routes for the public, unlocking more economic benefits from its green mountains and clear waters.
