Shanxi leads national coal production for four years straight
Updated: 2024-12-26
Since 2021, North China's Shanxi province has been leveraging its coal and coal-fired power to ensure energy security, securing coal supply for 24 provinces at fixed prices. Ranking third in inter-province power supply, Shanxi has played a vital role in ensuring energy stability nationwide.
From 2020 to 2023, the province maintained its position as the top coal producer in China, fulfilling long-term coal supply contracts exceeding 1.2 billion metric tons and significantly contributing to national energy security.
Beyond being a coal powerhouse, Shanxi boasts abundant coalbed methane resources, accounting for over 80 percent of the national output. Moving forward, the province aims to enhance reserves, production, and storage, positioning coalbed methane as a vital supplementary gas source for China's independent natural gas supply.
Meanwhile, Shanxi plans to accelerate intelligent coal mine construction and green mining practices, optimize coal regional and spatial layouts, and achieve sustainable development. This involves building high-capacity, high-parameter, and low-energy-consumption power plants to employ coal-fired power for stability and regulation, alongside developing flexible and smart grids to facilitate power exchange among various sources.
Furthermore, Shanxi will expedite technological upgrades, drive equipment modernization, and promote wind, solar, and new energy storage in an effort to establish and expand new energy industrial clusters and propel clean and efficient coal utilization.
