Two places in North China's Shanxi province have been selected as cases in the "2023 WTA Best Practices of Rural Revitalization Through Tourism," recently released by the World Tourism Alliance (WTA) and the International Poverty Alleviation Center in China.
The WTA is an international non-profit tourism organization initiated and established by China, with 236 members from 41 countries and regions.
The 50 practices selected were based on sustainability, replicability, quantifiability, innovation, material integrity, and positive social impact in rural vitalization through tourism.
The selected cases from Shanxi are the Lanshangen·Yuncheng Impression scenic area in Yuncheng city and the Red Village Memory Industrial Innovation and Integration Development Demonstration Zone in Zuoquan county.
The former is a modern village featuring traditional folk customs and daily life as tourism resources, making the residents the prominent entrepreneurs and operators of businesses.
After four years of development, the scenic area has driven the development of local agriculture, animal husbandry, and handicraft industries. At the same time, it has created a night culture and tourism consumption cluster. Over 100 local intangible cultural heritage products and traditional high-quality brands have settled in the area.
The latter, with the construction of Zuoxian Northern China International Outdoor Sketching Base as the focus, promotes the integration of tourism related to the revolutionary legacy of the Communist Party of China, ecological tourism, and rural tourism.
