Pujiang Innovation Forum calls for strengthening intl scientific collaboration
Open science is crucial for accelerating the implementation of basic research into industry
Bayazit Keshan, CEO of Elsevier, emphasized the significance of open science for promoting global cooperation and scientific innovation.
Open science includes principles such as open access, open data, open standards, open assessment, and open infrastructure, all of which rely on global cooperation to enable collaboration, Bayazit said.
Elsevier supports open science through various initiatives, including promoting international collaboration through global journals, providing diverse open access publishing options, and facilitating data sharing among researchers, Bayazit said.
"Scientists from different regions, departments, and disciplines sharing information, resources, and ideas contributes to the discovery of new trends, the forming of new ideas, and ultimately improvements in the quality of scientific research papers," said Bayazit.
Data analysis measuring the quality of scientific research papers shows that international collaborative papers have significantly higher quality indicators. For China specifically, papers co-authored with foreign authors have even higher quality indexes. Similarly, collaborations between academia and industry have led to improved research paper quality, according to Bayazit.
Bayazit used Professor Hao Yong from the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences as an example. His research on the potential of cerium dioxide in energy conversion paved the way for a research team from ETH Zurich to develop fuel synthesis technology using carbon dioxide and water, with the support of cerium dioxide. This led to collaboration between Swissair, Lufthansa, and the laboratory to develop "solar aviation fuel".
Open science is based on principles such as open access, open data, open standards, open assessment, and open infrastructure, all of which rely on global cooperation, Bayazit said.
"Over the past decade, basic research achievements have been successfully applied thanks to increasingly close international scientific and technological cooperation and sharing," Bayazit said.
International cooperation is vital in building an international industrial chain and gaining a competitive advantage
He Dongfeng, chairman of Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), discussed how COMAC actively promotes technological innovation by integrating new materials, advanced power and airborne systems, key technologies, and information technologies.
He emphasized that the support of an international industrial chain is necessary for large aircraft. Since 2006, China has launched a number of special projects for large aircraft, such as the ARJ21, C919, and C929 series of civil aviation passenger aircraft.
COMAC aims to uphold independent innovation and open cooperation to shape the global innovation ecosystem of large aircraft by working with suppliers, partners, and customers worldwide, He said.
