Latest internet-based trends drive zone's expansion
The Zhangjiang National Innovation Demonstration Zone has been actively promoting the development of internet-based platforms, technologies, products and services, to help Shanghai to achieve its ambition of becoming a global science and technology hub.
Founded in the Zhangjiang zone in 2010, the Yangpu Cloud Computing Innovation Base is one of the key innovation platforms in the city, and is on its way to becoming a first-class innovation center. As a professional industrial park that focuses on cloud computing, big data and other internet-related emerging industries, the base provides solutions for enterprises seeking growth along the entire industrial chain.
Cloud computing and big data are new trends in information technology's development and are changing the way people access IT services and resources, said Yang Ling, general manager of Yangpu Cloud Computing Base Development Co, operator of the base.
"The purpose of building the innovation base for cloud computing and big data is to develop an industrial platform in Shanghai that can attract entrepreneurs, investors and partners to promote collaborative innovation and joint development," Yang said.
Since its establishment, the Yangpu base has fostered around 1,000 innovative enterprises. Operating income from its cloud computing, big data and other related industries reached 15 billion yuan ($2.2 billion) in 2015.
In addition to creating an environment suited to serving the development of enterprises, the base also provides support in the form of physical space and funds. For example, the Yangpu cloud computing base has established the Shanghai Cloud Computing Tower, covering about 10,000 square meters. It exists specifically to foster startups.
Yang said they are looking to find an effective way to better connect enterprises, academic organizations and the industry to ensure greater achievements.
It also plans to work with the surrounding universities, such as Fudan University and Tongji University, to establish big data labs and training centers. It will work with leading companies and industry funds to establish a 100,000-square-meter big data industry center.
The base also decided to set up a new 1 billion yuan fund to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. The fund is designed to attract nongovernment capital for joint assessment, investment and services for big data startups.
In addition to a series of internet-related innovation centers and bases, Zhangjiang has also attracted a number of internet technology enterprises, which have produced notable results in recent years.
